Vadnais Heights Wood Distributor to Close After 62 Years, Sell 55-Acre Campus

A Vadnais Heights wood distributor will close after 62 years and sell its roughly 55-acre campus.
Structural Wood Corp., located at 4000 Labore Road in Vadnais Heights, will close at the end of the year and sell its four-building, rail-served campus. The wholesale distributor of engineered wood products was founded in 1964. Its products were critical to the development of roughly 30 Cabela’s stores (including Rogers and Woodbury), multiple REI stores (including Woodbury and Bloomington), the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, multiple Minnesota State Fair buildings and hockey rinks around the state.
Structural Wood supplied engineered wood products to the building and construction industries in the Upper Midwest. Engineered wood products bind together wood pieces to create stronger timber typically used in construction. One such product is glulam, which is made of glued laminated timber and is stronger than steel on a strength-to-weight basis.
The company struggled in recent years, according to President Jim Schumacher. Investment groups bought many of its customers and consolidated their purchasing, which “dramatically” reduced Structural Wood’s customer base, Schumacher wrote in an email. Meanwhile, Covid caused years of supply chain issues while demand in the Midwest waned for glulam projects.
The company provided framing materials to tens of thousands of Midwest homes and thousands of businesses around the country, touching every state besides Hawaii, Schumacher said.
“Big and small, we have done them all,” Schumacher wrote in an email. “We have had a good run with good people over the last 62 years.”

Edina-based Stack Industrial Partners co-founders Chris Weirens and Alex Baron are listing the property. Stack Industrial Partners, an industrial real estate brokerage firm comprised of former Transwestern brokers, launched earlier this year.
The listing does not include an asking price. Ramsey County estimates it’s worth about $5 million.

The campus includes:
- A 44,500-square-foot warehouse with a 24–45 foot clear height
- A 34,800-square-foot fabrication shop and office
- The office is 9,550 square feet
- The shop’s clear height is 14 to 22 feet
- A 1,400-square-foot garage with a 16-foot clear height
- A 1,270-square-foot storage shop with a 12-foot clear height
- 23.6 acres of yard space
Three of the four buildings were erected in 1976.
“Sites like this don’t come available often. Rail-served, 20 acres of outdoor storage, interstate visibility, and minutes from MSP and 694—that combination is genuinely rare in the Twin Cities market,” Baron wrote in an emailed statement. “We expect significant interest from industrial users.”
